POAD (peripheral arterial occlusive disease) is a common condition, in which there is a build up of fatty deposits in the arteries which restrict blood supply to the muscles of the legs. Many people have no symptoms. However, many people have a painful ache in their legs when walking. This often resolves again at rest. The medical term for this is "intermittent claudication".

The symptoms of POAD develop slowly over a period of time and as a chronic disease it has a huge impact on the health and well being of sufferers. The pain on walking becomes restrictive, reducing walking distance and general mobility.

The condition can lead to critical ischaemia which requires urgent medical intervention.

The Ducest Neurostimulation Therapy offers for the first time a drug free, effective and patient friendly therapeutic option for the treatment of Peripheral Arterial Disease. (PAD)

This is a minimally invasive therapy in which the brainstem is modulated through electrical stimulation of an afferent branch of the great auricular nerve accessed in the fossa triangularis of the ear.

Modulations in the brain stem caused by intermittent continuous stimulation of the auricular nerve can result in improved perfusion of the extremities leading to a reduction in the severity of symptoms.

The aim of the treatment is to slow the progress of the disease, reducing the number of amputations and facilitating a greater freedom of movement and hence a better quality of life.

A clinical trial by Senior Consultant Dr Thomas Payrits supports the effectiveness of Ducest neurostimulation therapy, showing a high level of patient compliance.

The study shows a significant rise in the transcutaneous partial pressure of oxygen.

Further clinical evaluation is taking place in UK and European hospitals where patients & clinicians are realising the benefits of this device.
